Heliogen, Bloom Energy team up on hydrogen

Clean-energy focused Heliogen and Bloom Energy said July 22 that they planned to combine forces to use solar power to make green hydrogen at a facility in California.

Bloom Energy will provide the electrolyser, while Heliogen will utilise its solar power system to break water into oxygen and hydrogen, the latter of which is an emerging component of the energy transition.

“By coupling our technology with Bloom Energy’s electrolysers, we can produce this crucially important fuel at an attractive price point,” said Heliogen CEO Bill Gross.

Heliogen in June raised more than $100mn to support the development of a solar energy system that could support green hydrogen.

Two funding rounds yielded $108mn for its so-called Sunlight refinery system, a turnkey solar power system. The latest tranche brought total funding to more than $200mn.

Both Bloom Energy and Heliogen said their joint green hydrogen project in California could be up and running by the end of the year.
