Hungary states Support for Competing Pipelines
The Hungarian government is committed to both the South Stream and the Nabucco gas pipeline projects in order to secure the country's safe energy supply, daily Népszabadság said, quoting officials from the Ministry of National Development Ministry.
The European Union-backed Nabucco pipeline would bring gas from Central Asia to Europe, reducing the region's energy dependence on Russia. The rival South Stream pipeline would deliver Russian gas to Europe, but bypass Ukraine, whose rows with Moscow have resulted in gas shortages in Europe.
The ministry officials said the biggest benefit of the South Stream project is that it will bypass Ukraine.
Hungary's previous government also voiced its support for both projects.
