Hydrawell wins decomm work at Kinsale

Kinsale Energy, a subsidiary of Malaysia's Petronas, has awarded a multi-year contract to Norway's Hydrowell for decommissioning 15 wells at the Kinsale fields in the Irish Celtic Sea.

Hydrowell reported on April 1 it would provide its perforate, wash and cement (PWC) system on the wells during a two-year campaign. PWC is an alternative to traditional plug and abandonment and downhole tooling techniques, it said, and its use could cut the operational sequence by up to six days compared with the conventional section milling alternative. The extra efficiency reduces the environmental impact and cuts costs, according to the company.

The Kinsale fields started flowing gas in 1978 and until 2015, were Ireland's only source of indigenous gas supply. That year the Corrib field came on stream, but it too is now in decline.

Production at the Kinsale fields ceased in July last year and decommissioning started in November.
