Hyundai Mipo to Build World's Largest LNG-Powered Bulk Carrier

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard will be building world’s largest LNG-powered bulk carrier.

POSCO’s high manganese steel, which was independently developed by the company for the first time in the world, will be used for the fuel tank of the LNG-powered bulk carrier to be built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. POSCO will start supplying the high manganese steel to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard from the third quarter of this year, the company said in a statement published on its website on Wednesday.

Bulk carriers usually carry unpacked freight such as grain, ore and coal.

The largest volume of any of the LNG-powered bulk carriers has been able to carry 7,000 tonne so far, but the new ship will be able to carry 50,000 tonne of freight, about seven times more than the existing ones, POSCO added. The vessel will have dual-fuel-capable engine that can use both oil and LNG.

The ship will be completed at the end of next year and be used to carry limestone from Gangwon-do to Gwangyang works for POSCO from 2018.
