India May Supply Russian LNG to Pakistan

India has offered to import LNG from Russia and supply to Pakistan and talks on the issue are in advanced stage, Deccan Chronicle has reported citing a senior official from GAIL.

There is already a pipeline from Mumbai to Jalandar that would be extended up to Lahore when Pakistan firms up plans to import LNG through India.

“We are in talks with Sui Southern Gas Company in Pakistan to import LNG from Russia and supply it to Pakistan,” the official told the newspaper. He said prices are still being worked out.

GAIL recently inked a long-term contract with Gasport of Russia to source 2.5 million tonnes of LNG per year for the next 20 years. A portion of it could be supplied to energy-starved Pakistan once the proposal goes through, the newspaper report said.

The laying of a pipeline beyond Jalandhar and up to Pakistan will begin only when Pakistan makes a firm commitment on the quantity of import, the official said.
