India's June LNG Imports Rise 39% on Year

India’s LNG imports saw year on year increase for the fourth straight month in June as domestic gas demand remained robust.

Last month India imported the equivalent to 2.51bn mof pipeline gas in the form of LNG (about 1.86mn metric tons), up 39% year on year, according to data published July 20 by the Indian oil ministry's Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC). Imports for the month of May were 2.26bn m3, up 16.5% year on year.

During the first three months of the present financial year starting April 1, cumulative imports were 7.05bn m3, up 19% year on year. India's LNG imports last year were the highest ever at 26.4bn m³, up 7% year on year, according to PPAC data. Major buyers of LNG were Petronet LNG, Gail, Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation and Reliance Industries.
