India's Welspun Wins Barossa Pipe Contract

India’s Welspun Corp. has secured an offshore pipes supply contract in Australia for the Barossa offshore development project from Allseas Marine Contractors Australia, the company said March 11 in a statement.

Under the contract, Welspun will manufacture and supply 270 km of pipes for offshore application. The project will be executed from India. The Barossa project is owned by a joint venture comprising ConocoPhillips, SK E&S and Santos.

“This is a first for Welspun in the quality conscious Australian offshore industry and reaffirms Welspun's strategic position in supplying pipes for challenging offshore projects across the globe,” the company said.

Meanwhile, Australia’s National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) has accepted ConocoPhillips’ plan for the construction and installation of the gas export pipeline on the Barossa field. The plan for the pipeline construction was submitted on August 2, 2019, and was accepted on March 9, 2020.

Earlier this month, the partners awarded the contracts for the supply and installation of subsea infrastructure for the Barossa project. This is the last major facilities commitments ahead of a final investment decision. The development concept consists of an FPSO, six subsea production wells, supporting in-field subsea infrastructure and a gas export pipeline tied into the existing Bayu-Undan to Darwin pipeline, supplying gas to Darwin LNG.

The project area encompasses petroleum permit NT/RL5 located offshore Northern Territory.  Santos holds a 25% interest in the Barossa joint venture while ConocoPhillips (operator) and SK E&S own 37.5% each.
