Indonesia Plans Five More FSRUs in 2017
Indonesia plans to build five more floating storage and re-gasification units (FSRU) in 2017, Antara News reported on Wednesday.
According to Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry two FSRUs have been build till now in West Java and Lampung provinces. The number of FSRUs is expected to increase to eight by 2018 and to nine by 2020, Antara News reported citing a document published by the ministry.
Plans are afoot to build 24 land-based re-gasification units in 2017. The number is expected to increase to 46 in 2018, 62 in 2019 and to 64 in 2020.
"Looking ahead, Indonesia will consume much larger quantities of natural gas due to the declining oil output," Sujatmiko of Mineral Resources Ministry said.
Since the beginning of this year state owned Pertamina has signed multiple LNG deals with companies such as Woodside and Total. The company is also planning to build a LNG receiving terminal in Indonesia.
In recent years, Indonesian domestic gas demand has jumped significantly amid declining production leading to rise in imports. Many experts predict the southeast Asian nation will become a net importer of gas by the start of the next decade.
