Indonesia's Shale Gas Regulation to be Issued This Year

Indonesian government is in the process of preparing regulations on shale gas.

The energy ministry has prepared a draft and expects to issue the special regulation this year. The regulation would be on the lines of what has been laid down for coal bed methane.

The government has identified shale gas potential in three basins in Sumatra, two basins in Java, two basins in Kalimantan and in Papua.

Aside from preparing the regulation, the government will conduct at least one joint study on shale gas.

Indonesia also plans to engage the US in exchanging information and experiences on the development of unconventional gas, including price, environment protection and regulations.
