Industry players gather at Polish Shale Gas Day
A meeting between managers of top global fuel companies, scientists and representatives of public administration took place in Warsaw on March 30th.
Polish Shale Gas Day held at the Polish Geological Institute in Warsaw was called to discuss exploration strategies in recently discovered shale gas deposits in Poland and barriers which could hinder their exploration.
The meeting was attended by experts from ExxonMobil, Lane Energy, ConocoPhilips, Chevron, Marathon, BNK Petroleum, Talisman, EurEnergy and Poland’s Orlen and PGNiG, experts form geo-physical and drilling companies carrying out exploration work - Schlumberger, Halliburton, GOEC Krakow and Geofizyka Torun, wnp.pl reports. The focus was on how to transfer American experience in shale gas exploration to Europe where different legal regulations are in force. Due to the high capital-absorption of the new market segment, the most pressing challenge is to reduce the costs of exploration work.
"The meeting at the Polish Geological Institute proves that the phase of initial reconnaissance is coming to an end and the phase of active exploration work demanding high expenditure is starting. The first drill to be carried out by Lane-ConocoPhillips in Lebork area in the north of Poland is to begin in May. Other companies plan to launch seismic and drilling work soon. Therefore we have a guarantee that in few years we will know exactly how large Poland’s deposits of are’ said Jerzy Nawrocki, director of the Polish Geological Institute. ‘We met the makers of American gas revolution of the last 20 years. Owing to them the US has regained independence in energy supplies and became an exporter of natural gas. These people are in Poland now'.
Owing to favourable geological structure and investment climate Poland has become the most attractive shale gas exploration market in Europe’ Pawel Poprawa from the Polish Geological Institute is quoted as saying.
