Inpex suspends work at Abadi LNG project site

Japan’s Inpex Corp on August 11 said it has suspended the detailed survey work on the planned Abadi LNG plant construction site in Indonesia owing to the spread of COVID‐19.

The company will now “consider ways to realise the project in line with the changing external environment through initiatives including the introduction of CCS/CCUS.” Inpex had planned to start front-end engineering design (FEED) on the project in 2020. It controls 65% of the project and is the operator.

Indonesian authorities approved Inpex's revised development plan for Abadi LNG, at the Masela block in the Arafura Sea, in 2019. Due online in 2028, the $20bn project is expected to produce 9.5mn metric tons/year of LNG, 150mn ft3/day of pipeline gas for domestic supply and 35,000 barrels/day of condensate.

Last year, it signed a memorandum of understanding to sell LNG from the Adabi LNG project to Indonesian gas utility Perusahaan Gas Negara.

Meanwhile, Inpex said it realised a 51.98bn yen ($470mn) net profit in the six months to June 30, against a 120.80bn yen loss a year earlier.
