Iran Expects a Surge in Gas Consumption Due to Cold Spell

Gas consumption by households and commercial units in Iran will rise sharply due to the coming cold days, Manoochehr Taheri, director of the dispatching center at the National Iranian Gas Company, said.

The country’s average temperature has decreased to zero degrees Celsius today (January 3) compared to 9 degrees Celsius on January 2, he said, adding that the cold wave of weather will increase gas consumption to 510 million cubic meters per day, Shana news agency reported on January 3.

Taking gas imports into account, there is a possibility to supply consumers with 725 mcm of gas, Taheri noted. Iran imports gas from Turkmenistan.

Meanwhile, 180 mcm of gas has been stored to be supplied to power plants, he further said.

Taheri said on November 7 that some 202 billion cubic meters of gas was produced in the country in the past Iranian fiscal year, which ended on March 20.

He added that gas consumption stood at 190 bcm last year.

Iran plans to boost its gas output to 1 bcm per day within the next 2 years.
