Iran Output from Shared Field Beats Qatar's
Iran launched the platform of phase 21 of South Pars December 15, which added 28mn m³/d to the country’s gas production. The managing director of South Pars’ phases 20 and 21 told Shana that the output of Iranian side of South Pars reached 515mn m³/d, while across the border, Qatar’s output from the same reservoir is about 504mn m³/d.
Qatar started gas production from field about 10 years before Iran and its cumulative gas output is 2.4 trillion m³, while the figure for Iran stood at about 1 trillion m³.
Iran plans to increase the output capacity to 530mn m³/d in winter by launching the second platform of phase 17. Iran inaugurated the second platform of phase 18, adding 14mn m³/d of gas to production level on December 6.
Iran also plans to make South Pars full operational by 2021 to produce above 800mn m³/d of gas from the field. Iran’s total gas output capacity also stands at 830mn m³/d, projected to reach 1.25bn m³/d by 2021. The only undeveloped phase of South Pars is phase 11.
Iran signed a heads of agreement with French Total and China National Petroleum Corp on developing phase 11 of South Pars on November 8. It is expected to cost around $4.8bn and to produce 50mn m³/d.
South Pars is the largest discovered field of its kind in the world, a reservoir that extends into Qatar where it is known as the North Field. A third of the field with 14 trillion m³ of reserves is located in Iran’s waters.
