ITM Completes UK Power-to-Gas Study
UK-based energy storage technology firm ITM said April 24 it has finished a feasibility study for a large-scale power-to-gas plant for Northern Gas Networks (NGN).
Announced in November 2017, the study was funded by the UK government's Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (Beis), the goal being a plant capable of storing at least 50 MW within the boundaries of the NGN gas distribution network.
Four locations would be suitable for a large-scale first-of-a-kind power-to-gas demonstration supplying the stored energy to either majority domestic or industrial customers gas customers, said ITM. Of the four, Low Thornley in Gateshead, near Newcastle, is recommended as the most suitable site for deployment of a large-scale PTG demonstration facility in the size range 50-100 MW. It did not elaborate on the likely cost, government subsidy, and timetable for such a development, if approved. ITM has worked previously with firms such as Shell and Uniper, the latter also on a pilot power-to-gas plant.
