Itoigawa Gas and Water Bureau, Inpex sign pact on carbon neutral gas

Itoigawa Gas and Water Bureau, a utility in Niigata Prefecture, and energy company Inpex Corporation announced on June 12 an agreement to carbon neutralise natural gas. Inpex commenced the supply of carbon-neutral gas on April 1.

The Itoigawa Gas and Water Bureau aims to promote the use of natural gas and reduce CO2 emissions through fuel conversion for its customers. The bureau will supply the carbon neutral gas to businesses that have applied for a contract for a building category other than a general multifamily dwelling or a general dwelling and have annual use of carbon neutral gas of 1,000 m³ or more.

Inpex plans to work with city gas business operators to whom it supplies wholesale natural gas. The company will implement measures to reduce greenhouse gases globally by meeting customers' needs with a stable supply of natural gas and solutions such as carbon neutral gas and other clean energy forms.

The carbon neutrality of the natural gas is based on carbon credits certified by a credible certifier, derived from CO2 reduction efforts in forest conservation projects and other initiatives worldwide. Greenhouse gas emissions have been offset throughout the entire value chain, from development to combustion.
