Japan Expects to Increase LNG Imports from Qatar
Japan expects to import more LNG in coming years from Qatar in view of rising energy demand in the country.
“After the earthquake, Japan has drastically increased its imports on LNG from Qatar and will continue to do so for the next several years,” Morihiro Yoshida, managing director of Japan Co-operation Center, Petroleum (JCCP) told reporters in Doha, Gulf Times reported. Yoshida said that due to uncertain future of nuclear energy, Japan will have to depend on LNG.
“With LNG being a clear source of energy and one of the main sources of power generation in Japan, the stable supply of LNG plays a significant role in sustaining the Japanese economy,” Yoshida said.
Qatargas had last year said it was committed to delivering an additional 20mn tonnes of LNG to Japan over a period of several years to support Japan’s increased energy requirements, Gulf Times said.
