Japanese Mitsubishi Gets Gas Based Power Plant Project in Indonesia

A consortium of Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS), Mitsubishi Corporation and PT. Wijaya Karya (Persero) (WIKA) has received a full-turnkey order for a 500-MW expansion of the Muara Karang combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant from PT. PLN (Persero), Indonesia's state-owned electricity company, together with a long-term service agreement.

Muara Karang power plant expansion project is part of a 35-GW power expansion program under way by the Indonesian government to meet the country's rapidly increasing demand for electricity. The new plant, which is close to Jakarta, will become operational in 2019, MHPS said September 7.

In this project, MHPS will supply the main equipment including M701F gas turbines and a steam turbine. A generator manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will be deployed. Civil construction and installation work will be handled by WIKA. Additionally, once operation starts, MHPS will provide maintenance and management support including remote monitoring service and assignment of a site service director for the CCGT plant.

Demand for power is expected to expand at a fast clip in Indonesia. The International Energy Agency says electricity demand would almost triple by 2040. This is likely to result in greater use of natural gas in the region.
