Japan's LNG imports down 4% in April

Japan's LNG imports in April came in at 4.97mn metric tons, down 4.3% year/year, according to the provisional data released by the country’s finance ministry on May 20. Month on month, imports were down 30%.

LNG imports from the Middle East dropped 22.3% yr/yr while imports from Russia increased 17.1% yr/yr, the data showed. LNG imports from Asian sources increased by 22.8% yr/yr while imports of US LNG increased 12.2% yr/yr.

During the 2020 calendar year, Japan imported 74.46mn mt of LNG, down 3.7% yr/yr. Despite the decline, Japan remains the world's biggest LNG importer.
