MHI, PTT to study 100% ammonia combustion in Thai CCGTs

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with state-owned PTT to jointly conduct a pre-feasibility study on the utilisation of 100% ammonia for gas turbine power generation in Thailand, it said on March 8.

Under the MoU, PTT and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific, an MHI unit, will evaluate the economic feasibility of using ammonia as a power generation fuel, assessing the potential demand for clean and stable power derived from ammonia.

Additionally, both companies will study logistics and supply chain aspects, as well as the safety protocols for ammonia receiving, storage, handling, and delivery to power plants. The collaboration will also involve evaluating the timeline and potential site locations for a 100% ammonia direct combustion gas turbine power plant.

This initiative aligns with Thailand's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, emphasizing carbon emission reduction in the energy sector, MHI said.
