Japan's Tohoku to Buy LNG From Qatar
Japan’s Tohoku Electric Power has signed a 15 year agreement to buy LNG from Qatargas 3 starting 2016, the utility said in a statement Tuesday.
Tohoku will buy about 60,000-90,000 tons per year during 2016-2018 and about 180,000 tons per during 2019 – 2030.
The price at which the gas would be bought was not revealed by the company.
Japan has seen a surge in demand for LNG due to shut down of its nuclear stations as a result of Fukushima disaster.
Last month, Japan’s Ministry of Finance reported that the country imported 87.49 million tonnes of LNG last year, up 0.2 percent on year.
