Jordan Expected to Start Producing Oil from Oil Shales in Five Years

The Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale is expected to start producing oil from oil shale in Jordan in five years after the Lower House approved agreements it signed with the government, reports Jordan Times.

The feasibility study and actual work on the project is expected to begin once the deal is published in the official gazette, adds Jordan Times.

The project is expected to cost between $2 billion and $3 billion and production is expected to be 3,000 barrels of oil per day in five years, Maher Hijazin, the company’s president, told Jordan Times last week.

Production will reach about 30,000 barrels of oil per day by 2025, Hijazin said.

The company will use the Russian technology of oil shale pyrolysis (UTT-3000) and operations and production will be in the Atarat Umm Ghadran area.

Jordan has about 40 billion tons of oil shale reserves, the fourth largest in the world, according to the Natural Resources Authority (NRA).
