K Line design for ammonia-fuelled car carrier gets okay

Japanese shipping company K Line and Shin Kurushima Dockyard have secured an approval in principle (AIP) for the concept design of ammonia-fuelled car carrier from classification society ClassNK, K Line said on December 8.

In this joint study, Shin Kurushima Dock, ClassNK and K Line formulated a potential risk assessment and safety measures for using ammonia as a fuel. Based on the safety evaluation of ammonia fuel, Shin Kurushima Dock and K Line worked on the development of a ship that can both reduce environmental impact and meet actual operational requirements, the company said.

Ammonia does not emit CO2 during combustion, and is attracting attention as a next-generation marine fuel that could contribute to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) goal of reducing emissions from the shipping industry by 50% by 2050 versus the level in 2008.
