Karpowership denied approvals for S African gas-to-power projects
Turkey's Karpowership has been denied environmental permits for three gas-to-power projects in South Africa after failing to comply with public participation rules, the country's department of forestry, fisheries and the environment said on June 24.
The projects were to be located in the ports of Richards Bay, Ngqura and Saldanha, delivering a combined 1,200 MW of power capacity to help South Africa overcome rolling blackouts. Karpowership won a tender for the projects in March but the award has been opposed by environmentalists. South Africa's DNG Power was disqualified from taking part in the tender but has challenged the decision in court.

'The competent authority in the department has decided, after due consideration of all relevant information ... to refuse the applications for the environmental authorisations," the environment department said in a statement.
Karpowership is also supplying a gas-to-power project in Senegal.
