KHNP to set up hydrogen fuel cell power plant
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) will build and operate a 20 MW-class hydrogen fuel cell power plant in Gyeongju in the southeast part of the country, it said on April 12. The power plant will be capable of powering about 43,000 households.
The North Gyeongsang province has signed a memorandum of understanding with KHNP, Gyeongju City, Uiduk University and Seorabeol City Gas to kickstart the 100bn won ($89mn) project. The project work is expected to start in January next year and be complete by the end of 2022.
A hydrogen fuel cell is an electrochemical power generator that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, with water and heat as by-products.

Meanwhile, KHNP in a separate statement said that it has signed an MoU with SK E&S to develop a hydrogen-renewable energy convergence project. The two plan to develop water electrolysis technology-based green hydrogen and commercialise a fuel cell-based convergence business.
