Korean shipbuilder gets design approval for world's first 30,000-m3 LCO2 carrier

South Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has secured design approval from Lloyd's Register (LR) and the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR) to develop the world's first 30,000-m³ liquefied CO₂ (LCO₂) carrier, LISCR said on September 15.

The new carrier will incorporate a new type of steel in its tanks, which LISCR said would increase the efficiency of CO₂ storage and transport. It is lighter, without jeopardising integrity, enabling larger-scale vessels to carry CO₂.

LR will advise on technical regulations and the development of a Type C storage tank using the new steel. LR will work with the Liberian Flag Administration to formalise approval of the vessel and certify it for service.
