Ksi Lisims LNG advances down regulatory path

Ksi Lisims LNG, the 12mn tonnes/year floating LNG project proposed for Pearse Island in northern BC, said July 13 it had been issued a process order from the BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO), the next milestone on its regulatory journey.

The process order clears the way for Ksi Lisims to complete a full application for an environmental assessment (EA) certificate, which it expects to submit later this year. Under a process called substitution, the EAO will conduct an environmental review of the project on behalf of both the BC and Canadian governments, which will then issue their own respective decisions.

The BC government defines the process order phase as a formalisation of how the assessment process will be carried out: “identifying the required information; defining who does what, when and how; and determining how participants can work together for the rest of the EA and future engagement approaches.”

Under existing legislation, the EAO commits to a 120-day timeframe for this phase of the regulatory process.

Ksi Lisims LNG will be one of the most significant indigenous-supported industrial developments in Canadian history, co-developed with the Nisga’a Nation and hosted on land owned by the Nisga’a Lisims government. Designed to be net-zero ready from day one of operations, the project aligns with the BC government’s recently announced energy action framework.

The Nisga’a Nation is developing Ksi Lisims LNG in partnership with Rockies LNG Partners, a consortium of nine major Canadian natural gas producers representing a third of all Canadian natural gas production, and Western LNG, a Houston-based developer of LNG and related infrastructure.
