Kulczyk Oil Ventures Announces Successful Fracturing in Ukraine
Kulczyk Oil Ventures (KOV) has announced that it has successfully drawn gas in Ukraine using hydraulic fracturing technology (fracking).
The company reports that KUB-Gas, a company which is 70 percent owned by KOV with Gastek LLC holding the other 30 percent, has completed a successful reservoir stimulation using fracking on the Ologovskoye 6 well in Ukraine.
The measure yielded a test flow result of 2.3 million cubic feet of gas per day through an 8mm choke, from a previously unproductive zone.
Kulczyk says a frack of the zone was necessary as other methods failed to yield any of the gas that was trapped in a tight formation. "The zone had an indicated permeability of less than 1 millidarcy and was not capable of flowing gas at commercial rates before the fracking operation," a statement says.
The frack was carried out on October 26. It used a "cross-linked gel water frac fluid with 25 tonnes of ceramic proppant" to penetrate a well bore drilled three years previously to a depth of 2530 metres.
This is the first time a successful fracking operation has been performed in eastern Ukraine, KOV has said.
"We are extremely excited about the initial results of this frac programme," Executive Vice President of KOV Jock Graham said. "By proving that the reservoirs in our license areas respond to modern frack technology, we have opened the door to substantial upside to our Ukraine project.
"While fracking is a commonly used procedure in North America on both conventional and unconventional reservoirs and now more recently on shale, to our knowledge this is the first frack of its kind in this part of Ukraine."
Mr. Graham said that the results will motivate further fracking operations in Ukraine,
"The company will now integrate these positive results into its data base with a view to expanding its Ukraine frack programme and continuing our successful track record with our Ukrainian project."
KUB-Gas has a 100 percent interest in three other licences in Ukraine, in addition to the Ologovskoye addition. These are the Makeevskoye and North Makeevskoye, Krutogorovskoye and Vergunskoye licenses in the Lugansk area of Ukraine.
