Leading MEP Calls for European Regulation of Shales
The Guardian writes that the EU Parliament's Chair of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety is proposing a European directive that would penalise or even ban the exploitation of shale gas.
Jo Leinen, a member of the German Social Democratic Party and the influential chair of the EU parliament's main body overseeing environmental regulation, said there was likely to be support for such a legislative intervention.
"We need to be looking much more carefully at shale gas, and at the consequences of pursuing it," said Leinen.
