Financial TImes: Lithuania claims gas price victory in battle with Gazprom
Lithuania has claimed a victory in its long-running battle against Gazprom as the Baltic country’s prime minister said gas prices from the Russian company were set to fall by at least a fifth.
Lithuania, which gets all its gas from Russia, sought to put pressure on Gazprom over its contract, which runs out this year, by building a terminal for liquefied natural gas both to diversify its energy supply and gain leverage in price discussions.
Algirdas Butkevicius, Lithuania’s prime minister, told local radio that a deal signed between the country’s leading utility Lietuvos Dujos and Gazprom should lead to a big fall in prices. “I can say that the price will fall at least by 20 per cent,” he added.
