Lithuania, Hungary United on Energy Security, Opposition to Nord Stream 2

Lithuania is taking steps to strengthen ties with Hungary, while Hungarian officials are also in talks with Russia.

‘President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with President János Áder of Hungary at the Lithuanian Air Force Base in Zokniai. The Presidents discussed military cooperation between Lithuania and Hungary, preparations for the NATO summit in Warsaw in 2016, and European energy security’ the office of the Lithuanian president wrote on Tuesday.  

Grybauskaitė said that the geopolitical situation remains tense in the region. The two countries also confirmed their strong opposition to the Nord Stream II project.  

Also on Thursday, the Hungarian government published a note explaining that Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó and Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov recently held negotiations. 

“One of the most important agreements has been made regarding our long term gas contract due to expire at the end of this year: it will be amended in a way that we can use the amount of gas we have not consumed so far next year. So we do not have to pay for the gas we have not consumed” Szijjártó commented in the statement.
