Lithuania Optimistic About Shale Gas

Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas was again reminded that Lithuania could have enough shale gas to satisfy its needs for the next fifty years.

This projection was given to the Minister by a group of Americans after examining the results of a study done by Lithuanian scientists – according to Dr. Jonas Satkunas, Deputy Director of the Lithuanian Geological Survey.

In an interview with Lithuanian Public Radio today, Dr. Satkunas said that samples from the Lithuanian borehole are currently being studied in the United States.  Results are expected within the next two months and will shed light into what Lithuania’s shale gas stock its.  He also mentioned that the shale gas lies in about two kilometers deep and as a result it will be much easier to extract than in Poland (for example) where it lies some four kilometers deep.

Sekmokas hopes to pique the interest of companies in the US who have both the experience and the technology to be able to begin shale gas exploration in Lithuania.

Most recently, Cheniere Energy and Klaipedos Nafta signed a Memorandum of Understanding in order to address Lithuania’s future natural gas needs and assess LNG purchase and supply options.
