Lithuania to Offer Shale Gas Concessions

Lithuania will open tenders for the exploration of shale gas.

The Lithuanian Geological Survey plans to undertake an international tender for shale gas exploration and production in Lithuania in the first quarter of 2012.

Available indirect studies indicated that the south-western region of Lithuania may be rich in shale gas, but precise quantitative determination require direct investigation.

Earlier this year Environment Minister Gediminas Kazlauskas said Lithuania may commence test drilling for shale gas as early as 2012 with the assistance of foreign companies.

Comments attributed to geologists have said that Lithuania has 480 billion cubic metres of shale gas which could produce 100 billion cubic metres of gas.

However Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas says that these estimates are only theoretical considerations which are not based on geological data.
