LNG facility in Mexico opens
New Fortress Energy said July 14 that commercial operations had begun at its 3mn mt/yr LNG import and regasification terminal on the Baja peninsula of Mexico.
The terminal at the Baja port of Pichilingue is meant to support operations at a power plant at the port. New Fortress said the introduction of natural gas for the regional power sector is a bridge to a clean energy future.

“Our facility will enable customers to significantly reduce emissions and costs by switching from oil-based fuels to natural gas,” New Fortress CEO Wes Edens said.
US-based New Fortress said June 6 that it purchased LNG volumes from undisclosed distributors that will satisfy the needs for five terminals across the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America for the next six years.
New Fortress already has long-term supply deals to deliver natural gas from the Pichilingue terminal to the region.
Elsewhere, the company said it was nearly finished with construction of a separate 135 MW gas-fired power plant in Baja. That facility could be powering the local grid later this quarter.
