Malta Independent: Leaked Commission report highlights Malta’s plight as ‘gas island’
A draft European Commission report on energy infrastructure investment leaked this week has labelled Malta as among the EU’s seven ‘gas islands’ in that they have insufficient natural gas infrastructure connections with the rest of the EU.
The EU’s other six gas islands are Cyprus, Spain, Portugal, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia but in Malta’s case there is no connection whatsoever, although the government is known to be actively investigating the plausibility of connection to Europe’s infrastructure.
In the leaked paper, the Commission urges countries to speed up the connections of their gas and electricity grids.
