Methaplanet secures €6mn investment to advance biogas technology

Dutch biogas technology company Methaplanet International has concluded a €6mn ($6.5mn) investment round led by ABP, with support from EIT InnoEnergy, the company said on May 14.

This injection of capital will enable Methaplanet to undertake various initiatives, including the establishment of its own production facilities for its energy pellets. Methaplanet specialises in optimising biogas plants through its patented energy pellet production unit, the Maxximizer. By incorporating a Maxximizer into their operations, biogas plants can immediately begin producing high-yield energy pellets from agricultural waste streams.

“Methaplanet’s ability to convert agricultural waste streams into sustainable energy products will allow it to generate substantial positive environmental impact,” said Martijn Olthof, Investment Manager at ABP’s Netherlands Energy Transition Fund.

In addition to enhancing the efficiency of biogas plants, Methaplanet is committed to reducing CO2 emissions by minimizing its own ecological footprint and maintaining a sustainable supply chain.

Jacob Ruiter, member of the executive board at EIT InnoEnergy and CEO for the Benelux region, added: “Methaplanet’s solution to turn typically low-value feedstock into highly efficient pellets for biogas production can contribute significantly to achieving the EU climate goals. Therefore, we see a great fit with our broader investment portfolio that works toward the common goal of accelerating the energy transition.”
