Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, WinGD partner to develop ammonia fuel supply system

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD), a Swiss designer of large marine engines, to conduct technical studies on an ammonia fuel supply system for large, low-speed two-stroke marine engines, MHI announced on June 5.

The agreement aims to support the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) decarbonisation target by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the maritime industry.

WinGD is currently working on the development of ammonia-fuelled large, low-speed two-stroke marine engines, known as type "X-DF-A." Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will collaborate with WinGD in researching and commercialising the ammonia fuel supply system specifically designed for the X-DF-A engines.
