Canada’s natural gas industry – largely based in western Canada – is at a crossroads. Thanks to new drilling and completions technologies, including horizontal drilling and multi-stage fracking, vast new reserves of shale gas are now accessible, and the productive capacity of western Canadian producers is growing year by year.
But having massive new reserves is one thing; monetizing those reserves is quite another. Canada’s nascent LNG export industry is mired in uncertainty and indecision, while development of new pipeline capacity to reach North American markets can’t come quickly enough. At the same time, dramatically higher US natural gas production has turned Canada’s major export customer into its greatest competitor – for LNG exports and for domestic marketing opportunities.
