Mozambique's Gas Legislation Expected by Year End

Mozambique is expected to implement the proposed natural gas legislation by the year end, country's oil minister Salvador Namburette told Platts on the sidelines of the World Energy Congress in Daegu, South Korea.

"We are developing a natural gas master plan which sets all the main directions of how the gas is going to be used," Platts quoted the minister as saying.

East Africa nations, especially Tanzania and Mozambique, have in recent years discovered large amounts of offshore natural gas and want to exploit the energy resource to boost their respective economies and benefit their people.

State-owned ENH last week said Mozambique is still hoping to launch its fifth exploration licensing round before the end of the year, but the timing of the offshore round remains dependent on ratification of the country's new petroleum law, Platts reported.

Mozambique has delayed the launch of its offshore round since late 2012 in order to make fiscal and legislative changes to its petroleum law.
