Naftogaz to explore hydrogen opportunities with RWE
Ukrainian gas supplier Naftogaz has signed a memorandum of understanding with German energy group RWE to look at options for producing green hydrogen, the companies said on August 22.
The pair have agreed to "explore mutually beneficial cooperation opportunities along the full value chain of green hydrogen and its derivatives like ammonia produced in Ukraine," their statement read. They will consider producing and storing green hydrogen and ammonia in Ukraine, and its export to Germany, and will jointly explore commercial opportunities for selling Ukrainian green hydrogen in European markets.

The announcement comes a month after Germany and the US reached an agreement paving the way for Russia's Nord Stream 2 pipeline to go ahead. The project is expected to undermine Ukraine's role as a key transit route for Russian gas flowing to Europe. To offset the resulting loss of revenues, Germany has pledged to provide Ukraine with funding to support clean energy projects including for hydrogen production.
