ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRESS STALLS IN 2020: IEA

Improvements in global energy efficiency are at their slowest rate in a decade as a result of the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned in a report published on December 3.

  • The IEA estimates that energy efficiency improvements can deliver around half of the reductions in energy-related greenhouse gas emissions needed over the next two decades to put the world on track to meet its climate goals.

CHINESE GAS IMPORTS DOWN 3% IN NOV

China’s natural gas imports via pipeline and in the form of LNG in November were down 3% year on year at 9.17mn metric tons, according to customs department data published December 7. Imports were up 22% month on month, however.

  • China’s natural gas production reached 16.3bn m3 in October, up 11.9% yr/yr, data published on November 16 by the National Bureau of Statistics showed. The country imported 5.02mn metric tons of LNG in October, up 25.4% yr/yr, the customs department’s data published on November 23 showed.

TOTAL TEST-FLOWS GAS OFF S AFRICA

France's Total has test-flowed gas and condensate from the Luiperd-1X well, where it made its second discovery off South Africa in October, project partner Africa Energy reported on December 7.

  • Total operates the block with a 45% interest, while Africa Energy has a share in a participating consortium, giving it an indirect stake of 4.9%. The French major made its first play-opening discovery off South Africa in February last year, when it targeted the Brulpadda prospect.

HYDROGEN POSES THREAT TO GAS: NLNG

Hydrogen poses a threat to natural gas, the CEO of Nigerian LNG exporter Tony Attah said in an online session, calling on Nigeria to make greater efforts to monetise its gas resources.

  • Hydrogen can be produced from gas through processes such as methane reforming, but many countries are instead prioritising the development of hydrogen from water, using electrolysers powered by renewable energy.

  • The fuel could prevent Nigeria from maximising its gas potential if it takes centre stage in the energy transition, Attah said.

UK REGULATOR CLEARS $53BN ENERGY GRID PLAN

UK regulator Ofgem has cleared a £40bn ($53.4bn) investment plan for the country's energy infrastructure in 2021-2026, it said.

  • The regulator has also cleared a further £10bn for funding green energy projects, which it said was an unprecedented amount, in order to help the UK reach its 2050 net-zero target. These projects aim to prepare energy grids to handle 40 GW of North Sea wind power capacity.

CENTRICA RESUMES TALKS ON SPIRIT SALE: PRESS

UK energy group Centrica has resumed talks to sell its North Sea exploration and production arm Spirit Energy, Bloomberg reported on December 7.

  • The company put its 69% stake in the business up for sale last year under plans to focus more on energy supply, only to shelve the divestment this summer because of market volatility.
  • It recently sold off its North American energy supply, services and trading subsidiary Direct Energy to US NRG Energy for $3.6bn to bring down its debt, and is also understood to be seeking a buyer for its LNG supply contracts.
