NGW Magazine: Minor Asian Buyers Mop Up LNG

The drop in LNG demand in some of the world’s biggest buyers has forced sellers to find alternative homes in the short term; long-term solutions are needed though and new importers are part of the picture.

Higher LNG imports by emerging Asian economies such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Pakistan have to some extent offset reduced purchases by major buyers such as Japan, South Korea, and China, according to a report published by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) on August 24.

The new entrants, normally grouped together in tables as ‘others’, are turning to gas which has suddenly become very affordable. This provides welcome relief to distressed producers and sellers of LNG such as Qatar.
