Norwegian Shale Gas Development Unlikely
The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) confirms the existence of shale gas on the Norwegian shelf, but they believe the resources will stay put. Extracting it will be too expensive.
There is shale gas on the Norwegian shelf, but in foreseeable future this will be too expensive to produce, Director of Communications, Eldbjørg Vaage Melberg, told Teknisk Ukeblad.
There are also shale gas resources onshore in Norway, and the IEA estimates that Europe in total has shale resources of 35.000 billion cubic meters. In Europe, Gas Shales in Europe (GASH), is currently working on identifying the shale resources. According to NPD, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Hungary, France, Italy and England all have shale gas basins possible to develop.
According to geologist Ola Magne Sæther there is shale gas in the black shale around Oslo and Andøya.
These layers have been subjected to a lot of high pressure and temperature so most of the gas is probably boiled away, Sæther says.
