Novatek Opens First Carbon Neutral LNG Filling Station

Russian gas producer Novatek announced on December 1 the opening of Europe's first carbon-neutral LNG refuelling station in Rostock, Germany.

The carbon footprint from the station's LNG will be offset by various emission reduction projects, Novatek said, including wind farms. These projects will be certified in line with the international Verified Carbon Standard, it said.

Novatek is planning a network of LNG fuelling stations for heavy duty transport at key connecting points between Germany and Poland. So far it has six LNG refuelling stations in Europe along with 19 regasification facilities. Novatek's first deputy chairman Lev Feodosyev noted that the company's flagship Yamal LNG export plant was already one of the most environmentally friendly liquefaction facilities in the world.

Novatek recently approved a new set of 2030 environmental targets, and it has also joined the UN-backed Methane Guiding Principles Initiative, aimed at encouraging companies to improve reporting of their emissions and to reduce them.
