Novatek to help Russian steelmaker decarbonise
Russia's Novatek said on June 4 it had signed a memorandum of understanding to help Russian steelmaker Severstal decarbonise its operations using hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.
The MoU envisages a potential joint project to produce so-called blue hydrogen from natural gas, using CCS to abate emissions from the process. The two companies will also look at jointly developing standards and engineering solutions to produce and supply hydrogen transport pipelines, turbines, storage systems and transport tanks, Novatek said.

Steel producers are among the major gas consumers in Russia, and replacing this gas with hydrogen has been proposed as a means of reducing their emissions. Severstal signed similar agreements with Gazprom Neft on June 3 on collaborating to develop hydrogen and CCS.
The steelmaker already receives its gas from Novatek. The pair signed a 55bn ruble ($874mn) deal in 2019 on gas supplies until the end of 2023.
