NTPC starts green hydrogen blending project in India

Indian state-owned power producer NTPC has commissioned a green hydrogen blending project in the city of Surat in the state of Gujarat, the company said in a stock exchange filing on January 3.

The green hydrogen is being blended in the piped natural gas (PNG) network of NTPC Kawas township in Surat. The project is a joint effort of NTPC and gas utility Gujarat Gas.

Green hydrogen in Kawas is made by electrolysis of water using power from an already installed 1 MW floating solar project. Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, the Indian downstream regulator, has given approval for 5% blending of green hydrogen with PNG to start with and the blending level would be scaled phase-wise to reach 20%, NTPC said.
