NYK announces completion of LNG-powered capesize bulker in Japan

Japanese shipping company NYK on January 31 announced the completion and official naming of an LNG-powered Capesize bulker, constructed for JFE Steel.

The vessel, SG Ocean, was named during a ceremony on January 30 at the Japan Marine United Corporation's Tsu Shipyard in Mie Prefecture. Ordered by JFE, the LNG-powered bulker is part of a long-term charter agreement and is scheduled to undertake the transportation of iron ore and coal from Australia to Japan. 

The LNG-powered vessel is expected to reduce environmental impact when compared to traditional heavy fuel oil-burning ships. The utilisation of LNG is projected to achieve a remarkable 100% reduction in sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, a substantial 75% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, and an approximately 25% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel slow-speed diesel engine designed by marine engine company WinGD.
