NYK leases out LNG carrier to EDF

Japanese shipping firm NYK announced on January 18 it had signed a long-term contract to charter out an LNG carrier (LNGC) to French energy group EDF.

The vessel is due for delivery in 2025 from South Korea's Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, NYK said. It will be equipped by WinGD-manufactured, dual-fuel slow-speed diesel engines, and feature an Air Liquide–manufactured Turbo-Brayton refrigeration system that can tap surplus boil-off gas.

The LNGC's 174,000-m3 membrane-type storage tank was manufactured by France's GTT, and is made of advanced insulating materials that reduce the vaporisation rate, NYK said.

EDF has been working in global LNG trade for a decade, and in 2019 it merged its operations with those of Japan's Jera to form EDFT.
