NYK showcases ammonia-ready LNG-fuelled vessel design
Japanese shipping firm NYK Line and Finnish engineers Elomatic Oy have completed the development of a concept design for an ammonia-ready LNG-fuelled vessel, NYK said on March 3.
NYK and its subsidiary MTI along with Elomatic kicked off this project in September last year so that an ammonia-ready LNG-fuelled vessel “can efficiently be converted from an LNG-fuelled vessel to an ammonia-fuelled vessel, based on the assumption that ammonia will become a next-generation marine fuel.”
The companies plan to offer ammonia-ready LNG-fuelled vessel contracts in 2023 and aim to complete building the first vessel in 2025.
NYK said it aims to be net-zero by 2050 for its oceangoing businesses. To achieve this goal, the company has been expanding its fleet of LNG-fuelled ships as a bridge solution to vessels propelled by future marine fuels, such as ammonia or hydrogen, it said.
