NYK's LNG-fuelled tugboat set for conversion into ammonia-fuelled vessel
Shin Nippon Kaisha, a unit of Japanese shipping firm NYK, will convert its LNG-fuelled tugboat Sakigake, into an ammonia-fuelled tugboat, NYK said on July 26. Sakigake underwent LNG bunkering for the last time at Yokohama Shinko Wharf.
Sakigake will begin remodeling in the autumn of 2023 and is scheduled to be completed as an ammonia-fuelled ship in the summer of 2024.
NYK said it is committed to driving the energy transition towards next-generation fuels like ammonia, with the ultimate goal of realising a low-carbon and decarbonised shipping industry. As part of this commitment, NYK is developing its ESG brand, NYK Green Earth, which focuses on various initiatives to create new value for low-carbon and decarbonisation through environmentally friendly businesses, including the shift to next-generation fuels.
