Oman to Phase Out Qatar Gas Imports

Oman will most likely phase out imports of natural gas from Qatar once domestic output is sufficient to meet demand, according to a newspaper report.

Currently Oman imports gas from Qatar via the Dolphin pipeline network. Supplies began in 2008 under a 25-year agreement with Oman Oil Company.

Salim al Aufi, undersecretary at the Ministry of Oil and Gas, said imports of natural gas via the Dolphin network — averaging 5-7 million standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd) — represent just a small percentage of the total domestic production of around 85 mmscmd, reports Oman Daily Observer.

The undersecretary pointed that Khazzan tight gas development project would come a long way in meeting local gas demand, adds the newspaper.

The tight gas project in Block 61 is being developed by BP and is expected to produce 28.3 mmscmd of gas from 2018.
